The concept of e-learning has evolved in recent years, especially after the invention of digital devices, internet access and software applications.

The use of e-learning technology has become a necessity in today’s society; it’s used in schools, colleges and universities, businesses, government agencies and military organizations. In general, e-learning is an online or digital course that uses computer software to deliver instruction to students on a daily basis. It is an efficient way of teaching that utilizes modern technology to make learning easier.
Initially developed as an alternative to physical training facilities for military personnel during the Vietnam War, e-learning systems became more popular after the 1980s with the introduction of personal computers and access to internet services. By 2000, Google updated their search engine program with a web-based educational system called Google web-based educational system. This led to a lot more information accessibility for everyone which spurred even more innovation in e-learning systems. Today, there are many different types of e-learningsystems including video games, e-books, online courses, social learning platforms and more. These are all useful ways of educating yourself without the hassle or cost of traveling to a physical learning facility.
The first use of e-learning occurred during World War II when the RAF used email courses to instruct pilots how to fly airplanes. In 1952 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Richard Delano developed something that led to the invention of e-learning; he invented SMART-tool use system for measuring student understanding in his courses. In 1963 at Cornell University, Joseph Engelberger invented a projector so people could see things in classrooms instead of paper; he also invented an instructional system called total instruction which influenced modern computer based distance education courses today.
Ted Nelson first coined the term ‘electronic learning’ in 1969 with his article ‘A Proposal For Electronic Classroom Instruction.’ He proposed using interactive terminals with modems so students could contact teachers directly without needing time or travel costs. Later that year Nelson founded The Association For Computing & Computing Education (ACCE) so these ideas could be shared with teachers worldwide. ACCCE was one of the first international professional education organizations devoted to electronic learning development. In 1991 Nelson declared ‘the year of the student’ with his book ‘The Year Of The Student: An Electronic Revolution In Higher Education.’
E-learning has transformed how people learn nowadays thanks to digital technology and internet accessibility. It’s easy, convenient and can be done at home or anywhere else with an internet connection. There are many different types of e-learningsystems from games to training systems for various professions; innovation is going strong so this trend doesn’t look like it will stop any time soon.
