How To Create A Successful ESL Mentoring Program
Mentoring is a common practice used in education to help students with academic, social and emotional development. When teachers offer to mentor students, they help those students succeed in school and in life. Mentoring is a reciprocal process where a mentor helps a mentee with specific ideas, guidance and support. In addition, mentors can provide a sympathetic ear for their mentees when they need it.
Mentoring programs are essential for helping EFL and ESL students adjust to life in America. Ideally, a mentoring relationship should be between an American and an English or ESL teacher. This is because Americans are more used to English as their primary language compared to English teachers. Furthermore, Americans are also more accustomed to English as their primary language than English teachers. This makes sense; the government has an obligation to communicate with its citizens in their primary language. Therefore, it’s best to pair an American with an English or ESL teacher for the best mentoring experience.
It’s important that your mentoring program provides a good environment for your mentees to discuss problems. This way your mentees will feel comfortable opening up to you about issues they’re having with schoolwork or with their peers. It’s also helpful if you’ll listen attentively and sympathetically while your mentee shares his concerns. Doing so will show your mentee that he can trust you with his problems- he’ll be more willing to share things with you and receive your help.
Lastly, it’s important that you set realistic expectations for your mentees when starting a mentoring relationship. That way you’ll avoid having to mentor large groups of students later on in life. You should also avoid becoming too personally involved with your mentees by giving them assignments or allowing them into your class regularly. This will help you keep professional relationships between you and your mentees while avoiding any possible romantic involvement between you and them.
A well-planned and executed EFL or ESL mentoring program can go a long way in helping EFL and ESL students adjust to life in America. Your main goal as a mentor is to provide a positive environment for your mentees to discuss problems and gain guidance from you. You should also set reasonable expectations for your mentees so you don’t have to mentor them later on in life. Maintaining these principles will make a difference in the lives of EFL and ESL students!

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!
